About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US to Shanghai

I am looking to do a mileage run and fly from the United States of America to China and back to the USA. Is this allowed?

You need to structure your mileage run so that you continue to third country before returning to the United States. Otherwise do what the rest of us mileage runners do and get the 10 year multiple entry visa. You are running out of time so you may need to schedule another mileage run to the Chinese embassy and apply for it before your trip to China
