About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying Bangkok-Chengdu-Helsinki, not leaving the transit area, 24h-visa still needed?

Hi, I'm flying Bangkok-Chengdu-Helsinki, with 3h transit time in Chengdu. Everything on one ticket, flying on a Chinese airline, not planning to leave the transit area at Chengdu airport. I'm carrying a Finnish EU passport. Do I still need to apply for a 24h visa? Or should I do it anyway, in case a long delay forced me to leave the airport? Thank you for your help! MP/Finland

Marko, you don't need any kind of visa because you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit. You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in Bangkok that you will travel to Helsinki via Chengdu using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection of your tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane. Here, one very important detail. I understand that you will travel on one ticket, but you will ask at check-in whether your luggage will be tagged all the way to Helsinki. I'm practically certain that this will be the case, but don't forget to ask, just for a case.

Upon your arrival in Chengdu, you will clear a shortened form of immigration and security and after that you will be allowed to go to the boarding gate for your flight to Helsinki.

In case of delay, even a very long one, just remain relaxed because this is not caused by your fault and you will remain perfectly covered by 24 hour visa free transit regardless of the length of your real layover. If the layover will be very long, you will be granted a temporary entry permit to exit the airport. Really, this is not a problem, although this will not happen for certain :)
