About:Visa on Arrival

Can you get a VOA if you already have a valid visa for China in your passport?

Hi Zupan! Thanks for your excellent article.

I have a dual-entry visa for China in my (British) passport with one entry left on it. I need this entry for a scheduled trip to Shanghai in two weeks.

I might need to go Shenzhen though in a couple of days' time and so I am wondering if I can do a VOA when I go to Shenzhen, even though I have a valid visa for China, and keep my last entry on that visa for my future trip to Shanghai.

Your advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Unfortunately, you cannot apply for a Shenzhen VOA while having a valid visa, although just a single entry, because the Chinese visa policy forbids simultaneous possession of two concurrent visas. In other words, when you enter China via any available border crossing, including those to Shenzhen, your remaining single entry will be collected.

Anyway, maybe I have a solution for you. Since you have mentioned that you are from Hong Kong and that you will have to go to Shenzhen before your trip to Shanghai. So, you will use your remaining single entry to enter Shenzhen and for Shanghai you will use 144 hours visa free transit by taking a flight from Hong Kong and after your stay in Shanghai by taking a flight back to Macau. From Macau to Hong Kong easily by bus or ferry. Of course, this plan is valid if your intended stay in Shanghai will not be longer than 144 hours, i.e. 6 days, not counting the day of arrival.
