About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour visa free question

If we are flying from the US to Hong Kong to visit Zhuhai for 2 days, and then back to the Hong Kong airport to fly home to the US, are we eligible for the 72 hour visa free? In this case the country we are arriving from (US) and returning to are the same (US). Also, we arrive at 6:00am on a Thursday and depart at 11:00am on Sunday (so technically 77 hours), but the time would not start until 12:00am Friday, correct?

Hong Kong is treated as a different country from China for visa proposes. US Passport can stay in HK for up to 90 days without a visa.
In order to go to Zhuhai from Hong Kong you will need to apply for single entry visa on arrival in Zhuhai for $140 USD per person. Its the same price as a 10 year multiple entry visa for US Passports should you apply for tourist (L) visa prior to your trip

You can visit Zhuhai, departing from Hong Kong only by obtaining a 3 day Zhuhai visa on arrival. There is no any available visa free transit option that would allow you to enjoy your stay in Zhuhai by departing to Zhuhai directly from Hong Kong.

In reality, you could rely on 144 hour visa free transit if you take a direct flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and in the end of that period or before if you want so, to take a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou port to Macau and then back to Hong Kong. In other words, your itinerary has to be:

Hong Kong - Guangdong province - Macau

The problem with US citizens and these visas on arrival, including a Zhuhai visa is the fact that they have to pay 956 CNY to obtain that visa. In other words, when you know this detail, than the mentioned option with flying from Guangzhou immediately looks like much better option.

By the way, if I have properly understood you, you are calculating your time for Hong Kong... You should not do that because US citizens can stay in Hong Kong absolutely visa free. This visa free transit policy applies only to mainland China and not to the territories: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.
