About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

US Passport Holder

Hi,

I’ll be in Shanghai on a single entry working visa from Nov 4- Nov 17. I have a roundtrip flight from Us to Shanghai with a return date of Nov 22. I would like to go to Hanoi for a few days and then return to Shanghai to take my flight back to the US. Will I need a visa to travel into Shanghai from Hanoi?

No, you will not. I assume that you plan to exit China at least during the last day of validity of your working visa toward Hanoi. In reality, you should do that to remain within the legal frames.

After your stay in Hanoi, you can perfectly return to Shanghai and after that to proceed toward US using 24 or 144 hour visa free transit in relation of your planned stay in Shanghai.

To summarize, your itinerary will be:

Hanoi - Shanghai - US

All you have to take care of is that your flight Hanoi - Shanghai is a nonstop one and that you have your flight tickets printed out, so that you can present them in both Hanoi at check-in and in Shanghai upon your landing from Hanoi at 24/144 visa free transit counter. Your separate flight tickets are fine.
