Max, could you, please just clarify a bit your itinerary because I honestly don't understand what does it mean Shanghai - Shanghai portion of your itinerary?

As far as I have properly understood, your itinerary will be:

Frankfurt - Beijing - Shanghai - Bangkok

and

Bangkok - Shanghai - Frankfurt

If I'm right, then your first itinerary is eligible for just 24 hour visa free transit and your second one is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area.

Your first itinerary is eligible for just 24 hour TWOV because you will cross two Chinese transit areas (Beijing and Shanghai) in a row and this is only eligible under 24 hour TWOV. If you want to stay for a longer time than 24 hours, you will need a visa.

In reality, it will be enough to obtain a single entry visa to cover your first itinerary and you will not need it for your second itinerary because it is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area.

OK, this is something :)

As I can see and you will correct me if I'm wrong, your first itinerary is basically a travel through China without any serious intention to stay there for some time. Now, if your entire transit within China is less than 24 hours, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. The entire time is calculated from your first scheduled landing, in your case in Beijing, until your last scheduled departure, in your case from Shanghai. So, if the time, calculated in this way, is less than 24 hours long, you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. Quite the contrary, if your entire time will be longer than 24 hours, you will need a transit (G) visa obtained in advance.

During your second stop in Shanghai, as I can see, you will have an overnight and also Shanghai will be your only stop in China. This is fine because you will be eligible for 24 or 144 hour visa free transit in relation to the length of your entire transit time in Shanghai. If your transit time is less than 24 hours, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and if it will be just one minute longer than 24 hours, you will enjoy 144 hour visa free transit.

You should print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you because you will have to present them to the relevant authorities.

By the way, you should be careful about the airports. As you know, now there are two airports in Beijing and also two airports in Shanghai, so if you will have to change the airports, which is allowed, you should leave enough time to successfully perform those transfers from one to the other airport! Please, have this detail in mind.
