About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

USA > SHANGHAI > TOKYO > SHANGHAI > USA

Would this itinerary qualify for the 144-hour policy? If I book a roundtrip ticket from USA - SHANGHAI, then leave SHANGHAI for TOKYO, before returning to SHANGHAI for flight back to USA?
