About:China Visa

Shanghai --> Bangkok --> Shanghai --> USA

We are in China right now and have single entry visas. We want to travel to Thailand for a couple weeks then fly back to Shanghai to then catch a flight back to the US. Would it be possible to just stay in the Shanghai airport for a few hours to wait for our flight back to the States? Or would we need to apply for a 72-hour visa while we are there?

Yes, actually you can enjoy 144-hour visa free transit in Shanghai. It's not a visa and you don't need to apply for it in advance.
