About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

24 hour visa free rule

We are flying from the USA thru Shanghai then on to Taiwan and don't have Chinese visas. We will have our tickets purchased for the round trip to Taiwan, but no boarding passes. We will have a receipt for our ticket purchase to Taiwan. Our flight to Taiwan is within 6 hours of landing and don't plan to leave the airport. Any type of CN visa needed or other form? What process do we need to follow once landing at PVG? Thanks,

You don't need a visa. You just print out your confirmed ticket and present it whenever needed at check-in/boarding/arrival.

As you have exactly mentioned in the subject of your post, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai and you don't any kind of visa.

If I have properly understood your post, you will fly on a single (through) ticket on the itinerary:

US - Shanghai - Taiwan

Also, you will have 6 hours of layover in Shanghai. Here are the formalities:

- You will print out your flight tickets and have them in hard copy with you
- You will declare at check-in in US that you will travel to Taiwan via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit
- After a short inspection, you will be allowed to board the plane
- Upon arrival in Shanghai, in case if your luggage is tagged all the way to Taiwan, you will just remain within the transit area waiting for your onward flight, but in the opposite case (you will know this detail at check-in in US), you will look after 24 hour TWOV counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. It is free and you will present your passports and flight tickets. After that, you will collect your luggage and perform a recheck. After a recheck, if necessary, you will return to the airside and wait for your flight to Taiwan.

Indeed, nothing too much complicated and also there are no charges for any operation in Shanghai.

I have to admit that I didn't properly understood your statement regarding the boarding tickets. Does that mean that you intend to fly on separate tickets, i.e. using two round trip tickets:

US - Shanghai - US
Shanghai - Taiwan - Shanghai

This is also fine, but you will have to apply for the above mentioned temporary entry permit and perform a recheck. Nothing to worry about, but just allowed enough time for your connections in Shanghai. 6 hours is more than enough.

I meant to say boarding passes, not boarding tickets :)
