About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

24 hours TWOV rules concerning check-in baggage

I plan on travelling in the future from London (LHR) to Hong Kong (HKG) with a 17 hour 40 minutes transit in Chengdu Tianfu Airport (TFU). I will have one piece of carry-on luggage and one check-in suitcase. The carry-on has sufficient items that I need for an overnight stay in Chengdu. My question is, can I leave the airport and go to the hotel in Chengdu on TWOV with only my carry-on item and expect my check-in item to be automatically transferred to the following flight from TFU to HKG?

In general, if you travel on a single ticket (single booking) via mainland China, your luggage will be tagged all the way from UK to the final destination, in your case until Hong Kong. You do not have to bother yourself about it because it will be handled by Chengdu airport staff. Also, when traveling on a single ticket, you cannot access your luggage during your layover regardless of its length of more than 17 hours.

The simple answer to your question is, yes, you will definitely exit the airport and head to the city with just your carry-on and without your checked luggage. This is done by literally thousands on a daily basis, so you should not be worried about this detail at all. In any case and just for a case, you will just ask at the time of your check-in in London of your luggage will be tagged all the way to Hong Kong. I am pretty sure that that will be a case, but you will ask just for your peace of mind.

One more detail. UK citizens do not need 24 hour visa free transit because they can enter, stay, explore mainland China absolutely visa free for up to 30 days. The rules of 24 and 240 hour visa free transit simply do not apply to them. If you are not UK citizen and are a citizen of some other country, you will rely on 24 hour visa free transit, of course. There will be no problems at all. Have a nice visit to Chengdu.
