In reality, the portion that interests Chinese immigration is:
Macau - Shanghai - Macau
Obviously this is not a transit, but a visit to mainland China since there is no third country (or eligible territory).
The rule is simple... It says that only the immediate points before and after your Chinese destination matter. Your immediate points are Macau and... Macau.
You are advised to replace the first or the second Macau with Hong Kong because you can easily travel between Macau and Hong Kong by bus or by ferry:
Macau - Shanghai - Hong Kong then to Macau by ferry
As you can see, the above itinerary is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. All you need to do is to have two different countries (or eligible territories) on the two sides of your Chinese destination.
