About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Would this itinerary qualify for the 10 days visa free travel?

USA > Hong Kong > Guangzhou > Shanghai > (layover in Hong Kong to) Singapore > USA

The essence of 240 hour visa free transit scheme requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China, regardless of their nature, are located in two different countries or eligible territories. Eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. As you can see, both of your immediate points are located in just one eligible territory - Hong Kong.

The only solution to rectify current situation is to insert a third country or eligible territory just before or just after mainland China. For example, you can insert Macau into your itinerary just after Hong Kong and before Guangzhou and make it eligible for 240 hours (10 days) visa free transit scheme. Like this your itinerary could look like: US - Hong Kong - Macau - mainland China - Hong Kong - Singapore - US. You can easily take a ferry or bus from Hong Kong to Macau, then a ferry immediately from Macau to Shenzhen and then proceed to Guangzhou. You can also cross the border from Macau to Zhuhai (mainland China) on foot via Hengqin border crossing located in the southern part of Macau and then proceed to Guangzhou by train. Yes, that would be a perfect solution. If they fly directly from Shanghai to Singapore without a landing in Hong Kong of any kind, their itinerary is definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. I hope it helps.
