Nure, you have two options to enjoy your stay outside the airport during your layover in Kunming:
1. One is called 24 hour free entry permit. This permit does not belong to passengers' rights and is considered as a kind of privilege granted to the applicants upon their landing in a Chinese city and decision whether it will be granted or not, depends entirely on discretion of Chinese immigration authorities. In other words, you can apply for this permit upon your landing in Kunming and you can hope that the mentioned entry permit will be granted to you. It is a kind of roulette, anyway if your layover is during the night hours and your probably is, it is advisable to book an accommodation in advance and to present this fact to the authorities by showing them a confirmation in hard copy. So, this would be by far the easiest way to exit the airport, but nobody can give you a guarantee that your permit will be granted.
2. You can obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa and since you are a Canadian this is very useful investment because Canadian citizens are eligible for multi year, multiple entry Chinese visa. Having a Chinese visa is the only way that will secure you an exit from the airport for certain.
By the way, if you are traveling on separate tickets and you will have to collect your luggage in Kunming and also perform new check-in, then an entry permit is granted for certain because without it it would not be possible to perform the mentioned operations. Anyway, I assume that you are flying on a single (through) ticket, so you will have to make a decision whether you will decide to play a roulette with the issuing of entry permit upon arrival or you will apply for a relevant visa while you are in Canada.
