Stanley, if the itinerary of your cruise is created in the way to put Shanghai between two ports in two different countries or eligible territories (Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau), then you don't need any kind of visa during your stay and exploration of Shanghai because you will be covered by 24 or 144 hour visa free transit scheme in relation to the time your ship will spend in Shanghai. For example, the itinerary Busan (South Korea) - Shanghai (mainland China) - Taiwan is fine. Also, Kagoshima (Japan) - Shanghai (mainland China) - Busan (South Korea) is fine too. Anyway, an itinerary Busan (South Korea) - Shanghai (mainland China) - Xiamen (mainland China) is not eligible and requires a visa.

It would be the best if you could present us with your two ports, immediately before and immediately after Shanghai.
