About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise ship to Shanghai

Hi,
We are US citizens coming in to Shanghai on a cruise ship from Japan on Nov. 4. We will be in Port for 35 hours. Then we will cruise for a day, go to Xiamen for a day, then on to Hong Kong.
We have a car reserved to pick us up at the cruise port in Shanghai and take us to Disneyland for the day.
Do we need any kind of a visa for that?
I called the cruise line and they said we did but from what I’m reading we don’t.
If we don’t, what documentation do we need in Shanghai and Xiamen?

You are definitely correct in your assumption that you are eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Indeed, your itinerary complies with every single requirement. You are arriving from Japan and after your mainland China visit you depart toward a third country or better to say in a third eligible territory - Hong Kong. Also, your total time spent in mainland China, in Shanghai and in Xiamen is shorter than 240 hours. The situation is very simple. All you need is your cruise voucher that will present to both Japanese and to the mainland Chinese authorities that you will be really in a transit through mainland China between Japan and Hong Kong. I strongly advise you to print out your cruise voucher because it is much easier to have it in such a form. Upon your docking in Shanghai you will fill out arrival card, perform fingerprinting at automatic fingerprinting machine and obtain a temporary entry permit as a designated 24/240 hour visa free transit where you will present your cruise voucher. After that you will cross the immigration and you will formally enter mainland China. After Shanghai you will also visit Xiamen and then depart from mainland China for Hong Kong.
