Cruise Ship staying in Shanghai for 2 days

Hi, I will be arriving to Shanghai on a cruise ship arriving Nov. 4 @ 7 am and leaving On Nov. 5 @ 6 pm. I was told that if I went on an excursion with the ship or qualified tour that I wouldn't need a visa. We would like to go to Shanghai Disney on Nov. 4, overnight on the cruise ship, and then we will go on a ship exursion Nov. 5. We will be covered by the ship excursion on Nov. 5 but not on our own on Nov. 4. I found a service that can pick us up at the dock and take us to Disney on Nov. 4 and they said we didn't need a visa but I'm not sure. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank You!!

Kelly, you really do not need a visa, but there is one requirement for that. It is important that your cruise is arriving from one country or eligible territory (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau) and that it departs from Shanghai to some other country or eligible territory different than the one you have arrived in Shanghai from. Fort example, an eligible itinerary is: South Korea - Shanghai - Japan or Taiwan - Shanghai - South Korea or some other combination. It is just important to understand that the immediate ports before and after Shanghai should be in two different countries or eligible territories. If this is the case, you will be covered by 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Have a nice visit to Shanghai.
