Part one:

Before your application at Shenzhen airport for Shenzhen visa, you have to be aware of several details:

- Your flight to Shenzhen has to be a direct one, without any other stop within mainland China, from a foreign country
- You will declare at the check-in in the X country from where you will depart to Shenzhen that you intend to apply for a Shenzhen VOA to be allowed to board the plane
- After your stay in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone area, you can depart from Shenzhen by air to some other country, but again directly, without any other stop within mainland China or alternatively to Hong Kong or Macau overland or by ferry

Now, when you know this I would advise you, especially if your next country after Shenzhen is a country different that the one from where you are arriving to Shenzhen or if your next destination is Hong Kong or Macau, that you use 144 hour visa free transit. Why? The reason is simple. Airport staff in most world airports are familiar with 144 hour visa free transit that is valid for travels to particular parts of China, like Guangdong province where Shenzhen airport is, but they are not so familiar with Shenzhen VOA. In other words, it could happen that they make you some troubled during your plane boarding.

Part two:

Having in mind all the above mentioned, again, think about using 144 hour visa free transit instead of Shenzhen VOA because this option has one more huge advantage. With 144 hour TWOV you are allowed to travel all over the Guangdong province and not only within Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. The only drawback of this option is that you have to leave Guangdong province by flight to some foreign country or by ferry to Hong Kong or Macau by exactly that ferry you will have to book online in advance, before your departure to Shenzhen.

If you remain with Shenzhen visa, you will easily apply for it upon your landing at Shenzhen airport. You will look after Shenzhen VOA counter and there you will fill out the relevant form, hand over your passport size photo and pay 168 CNY for the application. Basically, this is it. You will receive a sticker in your passport and be allowed to exit the airport. You should have some cash with you to be able to exchange it into CNY upon your arrival or a credit card, Amex or Visa to pay cashless.

Again, think about using 144 hour visa free transit instead of Shenzhen VOA. It is free and allows you much better circumstances for your stay within Guangdong province.
