About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

transit visa free: USA to India with 19 hour layover Shanghai (pu dong) back to USA.

i have a short (3 hr) and long layover (19 hrs) in Pu Dong airport in SH both ways to India.
1. Do I need visa to just stay in airport for 3 hr changing planes.?
2. can I get transit free visa for return trip from India...layover 19 hours at Pu Dong airport.

You don't need any kind of visa for both legs of your itinerary. Having the above mentioned layovers in Shanghai, you are definitely covered by 24 hour visa free transit.

As far as your second layover is concerned, you probably plan to exit the airport and to explore the city and also to have a couple of hours a decent sleep in your accommodation. In that case, you should book your accommodation in advance and have a confirmation of that booking in hard copy with you. You will apply upon landing for 24 hour free entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport and you will enclose the above mentioned confirmation. Your chances to be granted an entry permit are really very good.
