About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

China tour & return stop over

Hi,
I’m travelling on a tour arriving via flight from Sydney to Xi’an and departing from Kashgar border into Central Asian countries 10 days later. Then on my way back to Sydney is plan to stopover in Shanghai for 12 hours or less.

My question is I will be getting a tourist visa for the first journey. I’m thinking I only need visa free transit for the 2nd part. Is that correct? Thanks

Hi William,

I checked the details of the flight from Tashkent to Shanghai. It actually has a 2 hour layover in Urumqi between the 2 cities. Will this affect my 72 hours visa free transit in Shanghai? Thanks again!

Yes, with the stop in Urumqi, you are ineligible for 144 hour TWOV (72 hours were replaced with 144 hours a couple of years ago) and you are ineligible for any kind of visa free transit in China because your stop in Urumqi is not eligible for 24 hour visa free transit.

You should definitely obtain double entry Chinese tourist (L) visa.
