About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US to Beijing to Shanghai

We will fly in Beijing from the US for five days, take a train to Shanghai for a two day visit before boarding our cruise ship. Flying back to US from Singapore. Do we need a Chinese Visa? If we cut the Beijing stay to 4 days, and leave Shanghai on the 6th day, does that fall into 144 Visa-free

Travel between different transit zones is not allowed on a 144 hour transit. You need a visa to take the train between Shanghai and Beijing. The only way around it is to change flight so that you go non-stop to Shanghai from the USA (or via another country that is not on the cruise port schedule).
