About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hr transit visa free

Hi,
Im a US Citizen trying to visit Shanghai.
I found a great deal RT from USA->PVG and back but im planning on making it a split trip by flying out a few days later to a 3rd country (either Japan or Phillipines)
My question is I understand as long as I fly to a 3rd country Im ok but can I have return flights home back through Shanghai
Example: USA->PVG->TOKYO then return from TOKYO->PVG->USA

Yes, you can keep return flight tickets. It doesn't matter.

So its ok that I fly back into Shanghai the next weekend or same week and my tickets show RT from USA->SHANGHAI & RT from SHANGHAI->TOKYO as long as I still fly to a 3rd country

That won't be a problem as long as one portion of your ticket is the one departing Mainland China. Immigration will have access to airline's reservation system to verify.
