About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can we stay less than 144H, using that same 144H stay permit ?

For example can I stay and go back in like 72H instead of 144H, using that visa free transit despite the fact that it's "144H visa free transit" ? Will they let me at the airport?

Thanks.

What do you mean by "stay and go back"? You must be in transit to a third country. You can stay any time from 24 hours to 144 hours. Under 24 hours is covered by 24 hours visa-free.

stay and go back: stay in China, go back (departure at Hong Kong) to home country, in LESS than 144H. So can I use that 144H stay permit ?

You won't get the correct advice unless you post your full itinerary and nationality.
