About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

2 days in Beijing and 6 in Hong Kong

Hi, my Australian family and I are looking to spend 2 days and nights in Beijing, visit the wall then on to Hong Kong for 6 nights. My understanding is visa’s are not required for Hong Kong so that should mean less than 72 hours in mainland China and no visa’s. is this correct.

You have missed out one important detail: from where will you arrive in Beijing? If you fly from Hong Kong or mainland China to Beijing and then fly to Hong Kong you will need a visa. If you are arriving from somewhere else (not Hong Kong and not mainland China) then you may qualify for 144 hours visa-free transit.

Oh sorry. We are flying from Sydney Australia direct to Beijing for three nights two days then flying to Hong Kong.

Phil, you have mentioned where you will go after your visit to Beijing, but you didn't mention from where will you arrive to Beijing. This is very important detail because to be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit (144 hours has replaced 72 hours a couple of years ago) you have to be in transit, i.e. your itinerary should look like this:

X country (different than mainland China and Hong Kong) - Beijing - Hong Kong

If your itinerary is as the above presented one, you would be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit and to visit the Great Wall completely visa free.

To conclude, you have right to stay in mainland China for up to 6 days if your itinerary is a valid one and you definitely don't need a visa for Hong Kong.

You are definitely qualified for 144 hours visa free transit in Beijing.
