Phil, you have mentioned where you will go after your visit to Beijing, but you didn't mention from where will you arrive to Beijing. This is very important detail because to be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit (144 hours has replaced 72 hours a couple of years ago) you have to be in transit, i.e. your itinerary should look like this:
X country (different than mainland China and Hong Kong) - Beijing - Hong Kong
If your itinerary is as the above presented one, you would be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit and to visit the Great Wall completely visa free.
To conclude, you have right to stay in mainland China for up to 6 days if your itinerary is a valid one and you definitely don't need a visa for Hong Kong.
