Visa Free stay 240h YYZ>HKG>China(with bus)>HKG>YYZ

Planning on a trip from Toronto > HKG > Toronto.
1. Do I need a visa to go from Canada to Hong Kong?
2. During my stay in HKG, can I take public transportation like bus to China and back to HKG (less than 240H) before flying back to Toronto without VISA?
Am I eligible for this 240H visa free stay? Thank you.

Vinny, here are the answers:

1. You do not need a visa for Hong Kong because the citizens of Canada are allowed to visit and stay in Hong Kong for up to 90 days.
2. You are eligible for 240 hour visa free transit, but not in the way you have suggested. It is important to understand that 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, your itinerary: Hong Kong - mainland China - Hong Kong is not eligible because both of your immediate points are located in one territory - Hong Kong. Also, it is not eligible to travel by bus from Hong Kong toward mainland China.

The solution for your plan is relatively easy and I will explain it and you will decide whether you will find it convenient. You simply have to introduce nearby Macau into equation. So, your best option is to take a ferry from Hong Kong to Macau and as soon as you have arrived there, you will take a ferry from Macau to Shekou port in Shenzhen. This is eligible way how to enter mainland China under 240 hour visa free transit. When you arrive there, you are free to visit many Chinese areas, up to your choice, but you will have to have a kind of some rough itinerary. You can visit Guangzhou, Guilin, Yangshuo and even all the way to Beijing or Chendu by train or plane within mainland China. Your return back to Hong Kong is easy because you can use plane, train or ferry, but keep in mind that you will have to buy your plane, train or ferry ticket in advance, even before you depart from Macau toward mainland China because you will be asked to present your exit ticket in both Macau and upon your arrival at Shekou (Shenzhen). In my opinion, taking a train from some mainland Chinese city to Hong Kong would be the easiest and the most comfortable option.

So, now when you know what option you can take in order to be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit, you can plan accordingly. I know, it would be easier if you could do Hong Kong - mainland China - Hong Kong option, but that would not be a transit because a transit requires three different countries / territories in order to be really a transit. So, Macau - mainland China - Hong Kong is the way to go. Based on what I have presented/written, you will decide what will you do. In any case, I wish you a wonderful journey.
