About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can you take a train between 2 permitted areas if it passes through a non-permitted stay area?

Under the new 240hr visa free transit rules, you're now allowed to do cross-province travel to permitted areas. However for certain areas, it is difficult or impossible to reach them by train or other land transit without passing through a non-permitted area. This is especially for "transit islands" (e.g. Taiyuan, Harbin) which are surrounded by non-permitted areas. Are you allowed to take a train to those areas if you only get off at your destination, or is flying the only option?

In this case, you can either fly or take a direct train. Both options are fine and acceptable without any doubt, however, your flight has to be of nonstop type (without a change in a non-allowed area) as well the same situation has to be with a train or better to say your train has to be without any change in a non-allowed area. A flight or taking a train from Beijing to Taiyuan is fine if that flight or train do not have changes in a not-allowed area. We had very similar situation during the winter because many like to visit Harbin due to ice festival and similar and taking a direct flight or a train from Beijing was perfectly fine. In any case, you are allowed to do that, but double check the flight or train itinerary. Have a nice visit to China.
