Part one:
Geoff, you have left us without one very important information and that is where your cruise is heading after you leave Tianjin! OK, I will try to answer even without that detail assuming that you will depart for a cruise that will have some third country (or more of them) as a destination. If I'm right, your itinerary is the following one:
UK - Beijing (Tianjin is in Beijing transit zone) - X country
X country - Beijing (Tianjin) - UK
As you can see, you are eligible in both occasions, the first time definitely for 24 hours visa free transit since you will be transferred to the boat during the same day and for the second time for 24 or 144 hours visa free transit. You can easily calculate whether you are eligible for 24 or 144 hours... You should just count the hours form your scheduled arrival by cruise in Tianjin and until your scheduled departure by plane from Beijing. So, if the entire time is shorter than 24 hours, you are covered by 24 hours visa free transit and if longer, just for one minute, you are covered by 144 hours visa free transit. Basically, this detail doesn't change anything regarding your rights and visa free transit. Now, I have to add several more conditions that your itinerary has to satisfy for you to be eligible:
