About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise

14 day holiday with a 12 day cruise. We have a UK passport and are flying from UK to Tokyo, Japan with a stop in Dubai. Then cruising from Tokyo arriving in Shanghai on day 9 of the cruise. 2 days in Shanghai, then 1 day at Sea, then 1 day at Xiamen, 1 day at sea to Hong Kong where we get a flight to UK via Bangkok and Dubai. Is the 240 hour free visa fine for this as I note that Shanghai and Xiamen are on the acceptable list now?

Yes, your itinerary is acceptable and eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. As you can see the essence of your eligibility is the fact that the immediate points before and after your visit to mainland China are in two different countries or eligible territories. Eligible territories are Hong Kong Taiwan and Macau. So, your itinerary in the eyes of the Chinese immigration authorities are Japan - mainland China - Hong Kong. Have a nice journey/cruise.
