Yes in principle. Anyway, you have to meet several conditions:

- Your first itinerary US - Canada - Shanghai - Japan is definitely eligible, but your flight from Canada to Shanghai should not have any additional landing within mainland China and Japan! Also, your first port call immediately after Shanghai should not be in mainland China.

- Your second itinerary Japan - Shanghai - Canada or US is also definitely eligible but your last port call, immediately before Shanghai should not be in mainland China and your flight from Shanghai to Canada or US should not have any additional landing in mainland China and Japan.

If all the above conditions are met, you are definitely eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai twice!
