I am an Australian passport holder with a Hong Kong resident card do I need Visa for Shanghai thanks

You need a visa unless when transiting to a third country. Keep in mind that Chinese High Commission in HK offers multi-entry visas to HKID holders. However, if you are of Chinese descent, you must renounce your Chinese nationality to be eligible for a visa.
