About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

2026 Travelling Australia> Shanghai> Spain - Australian passport

We're travelling from Australia to Spain on China Eastern via Shanghai.
Our departure flight only has 5 hours layover, so we will transit at the airport, but on the return trip we have long layover (5am until midnight). Will we be eligible for 144 Visa to explore Shanghai for the day?
And if so, do we need to take all our luggage or will they automatically be sent to transit?
Thank you.

Australian citizens do not need a visa to transit, enter, stay and explore China for up to 30 days. Australian citizens do not have to bother themselves about visa free transit and similar stuff. Again, China is for them a visa free destination, so you can exit to the city freely and without temporary entry formality. You will fill out arrival card, perform fingerprinting and proceed to the immigration.

If you have booked your ticket as a single ticket, you do not have to bother yourself about collecting your luggage because it will be tagged all the way to the final destination. By the way, although it is not related/important for you, it is not 144, but 240 hour visa free transit since last year. I hope this helps and I wish you a nice journey.

Yes. Japanese citizens can also travel to China absolutely visa free for up to 30 days in the same way as Australian citizens do.
