About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is Beijing now still included in 144h visa-free policy?

I was in Shanghai airport yesterday and was NOT allowed to get on the connecting flight to Beijing because the immigration officers said “No, Beijing is NOT included”. Consequently I lost my money in the air ticket and the 4-day hotel reservation for Beijing. Can you explain?

Yes, 144 hours allows transit in Shanghai or Beijing but not both. Two stops in China limits you to 24 hours transit.

Yeah, the airline that flew you to China should have not even let you fly to Shanghai in the first place. Also Shanghai airport should have denied you entry and sent you back. You got lucky that is all you lost.

Where does your info come from? The one on this website states no limit to one stop. And the officer in Shanghai did not mention such limit but he pointed at the billboard which listed several cities WITHOUT Beijing, saying. “No sir Beijing is NOT on the list”.

Well, Tuan, you should really have done your research beforehand, including reading the very page that you have posted on. Although some of the information is out-of-date regarding 72 vs 144 hours, it clearly says "Passengers are required to leave from the same airport that they arrive", "The flights can only stop in one Chinese city", "For instance, if a flight lands in Xi'an via Beijing, passengers are not able to enjoy the policy". I don't know what billboard you are referring to, but I suspect it lists cities within Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang where you would be permitted to transit. Beijing isn't in any of those provinces. You were correctly denied boarding to your connecting flight and you have no recourse. Indeed, as mentioned by Paul above, you were fortunate not to have experienced further consequences.
