You can be wise traveler and avoid the necessity of obtaining a visa. For example, you can travel Australia - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Australia and become eligible for 144 hours visa free transit for wider area, including Yiwu that is located in Zhejiang province where you are allowed to travel visa free. You can use several airports, including Hangzhou from where you can reach Yiwu by direct buses.

Anyway, if you use standard return ticket Australia - Shanghai - Australia, you would need to apply for Chinese L Tourist Visa.

The very same thing is valid for Irish passport too. Also, the route Dublin - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Dublin is perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit. Here just one warning... As far as I know, there is no direct flight between Dublin and Shanghai, so a person traveling on this route has to take care no to have a layover in Hong Kong before reaching Shanghai because that would be considered as Hong Kong - Shanghai - Hong Kong itinerary and that is not allowed. So, any other layover between Dublin and Shanghai is fine with the exception of Hong Kong and any mainland China city, of course.

Exactly.

Your route: Australia - Shanghai or Hangzhou - Hong Kong - Australia
Irish route: Dublin - Moscow - Shanghai or Hanghzhou - Hong Kong - Dublin

Please, keep in mind that you can use Shanghai to arrive and Hangzhou to depart or in inverse order or just one of them, but Hangzhou cannot be used instead of Hong Kong because this is mainland China airport. The good detail is that Hangzhou and Shanghai are in the same 144 hours visa free zone so the travelers flying into Shanghai area are in more comfortable situation compared to other destinations because of two international airports in different cities, both with great connections worldwide.
