About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US to Shanghai to Canada?

If a US citizen / US passport holder wants to visit Shanghai without a visa, would they be able to book an itinerary from either the US to Shanghai to Canada or Canada to Shanghai to US and use the 144hr visa free transit?

Are there any rules with connecting flights in the US or Canada before or after the visit? Some of the previous answers suggested yes, but I don’t understand. Thanks

It's simple. You need to fly non-stop in and out to different countries. E.g.: New York-Shanghai-Toronto-New York is fine and so is Vancouver-Shanghai-Seattle-Vancouver. What's not fine is New-York-Shanghai-New York-Toronto or Vancouver-Shanghai-Vancouver-Seattle since in these two scenarios you are transiting in New York and Vancouver, respectively.
