You are definitely within the legal rules for 144 hours visa free travel. You will announce your intention of traveling visa free through China at check-in in Melbourne and after you arrive in Beijing you will apply for this convenience at the relavant counter. Just keep in mind to have all the necessary documentation in printed form (flight tickets and accommodation booking).
