About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I Enter China Visa-Free on My Planned Route from Singapore to Amsterdam via Hong Kong?

Hello, I would like to ask about visa-free entry to China.
Is it possible to enter China visa-free with the following travel route:
• Flying from Singapore to Guangzhou (stay 3 days in Guangzhou),
• Then traveling by bus from Guangzhou to Hong Kong (stay 2 days in HK)
• Later taking a bus from Hong Kong back to Guangzhou, (stay in Guangzhou within 24 hours)
• And finally flying from Guangzhou to Amsterdam?

Would I need a visa for any part of this journey, or does the visa-free policy apply for the entire route?

Part 1:

The first and probably the most important detail is the fact that the citizens of Netherlands can enter China absolutely visa free for up to 30 days. In other words, they should not bother themselves about 24/240 and similar stuff. When a citizen of Netherlands is traveling to China this is practically the same as if going to UK.

It is, however, true that visa waiver scheme will expire on December 31 of this year, but the general consensus is that China will extend this visa waiver for many EU countries, Netherlands included, for another year (2026).

In case, although not probable, but let's say that visa waiver extension does not happen, your itinerary would be definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit, but with some changes. However, here I have to put the emphasize on several details:
- Flying from Singapore to Guangzhou is fine

Part 2:

- You are strongly advised to take a train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong West Kowloon station instead of a bus. Taking a bus, in theory is also eligible, but you could find a hard time finding a through bus that you will be able to buy in advance on a single, through ticket. By taking a train you resolve all the formalities at a single place, in Hong Kong West Kowloon station where mainland Chinese and Hong Kong immigration authorities are co-located at the same premises.
- Taking a bus or train from Hong Kong toward mainland China is not eligible when traveling on 240 hour visa free transit. It is eligible in the other direction, but it is not when traveling from Hong Kong toward mainland China. Your best solution is to take a direct ferry from Hong Kong China Ferry terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui neighborhood (Southern Kowloon) to Nansha, a port located south from Guangzhou and connected to it by a metro line number 4. This option and a ferry to Shekou in Shenzhen are the only two options, beside a flight, of course, eligible to travel from Hong Kong toward mainland China "overland" under 240 hour visa free transit.
- In order to be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit you will have to stay in mainland China for at least a minute longer than 24 hours, based on the time from your scheduled arrival by ferry to Nansha until your scheduled departure from Guangzhou to Amsterdam.

Just to conclude, you should realistically expect that the visa waiver for the citizens of the Netherlands will be extended even after December 31 and when that happens, you can proceed with your original plan, absolutely unchanged because you can enter/exit China absolutely visa free and without bothering yourself about 24 or 240 hour visa free transit stuff that will not have any effect on your itinerary.

Part 3:

When the visa waiver is extended you can proceed with your original plan, but again, I would suggest you to replaces a bus option between Guangzhou and Hong Kong (and vice versa) by train because by taking a train is simpler and faster. In any case, have a nice visit to China.
