Gavin, I'm so sorry to hear that you have experienced such a stressful and unjust situation where you were obviously correct. So, if your itinerary with all your landings and means of transport of any kind was exactly: Amsterdam - Shanghai - Guangzhou - by train to Hong Kong - Paris - Amsterdam and you already had your train ticket for Guangzhou to Hong Kong with you, you were definitely and undoubtedly eligible for 240 hour visa free transit because already for half a year it is allowed to cross the Chinese regional (provincial) borders by train, bus, boat and plane, so your segment from Shanghai to Guangzhou was not an obstacle at all. In other words, you had a full RIGHT to have a connecting flight to Guangzhou. What a poor understanding from the side of the relevant official of KLM check-in agent. If only they were not so proud and if only they have called their Chinese colleagues, they would have received a confirmation that your itinerary was definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. I am even more surprised by such a poor knowledge and unwillingness to properly inform themselves and they operate a direct flight from Amsterdam to Shanghai. Just to conclude, I hope you will take relevant legal moves and demand from KLM to make at least a refund for the damage you have endured because of their ignorance. Again, I'm so sorry for such an unfortunate situation that you have found yourself in.
