About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US -> Beijing -> US

If my trip is under 144 hours, would I qualify if I am only planning to be in Beijing before coming back to my home country? Or does it require a third destination as if it is a stop on the way to another location?

I think the rules are very clear.
Country A - China - Country B.
USA - China - USA is not a transit but a visit to China and you'll need a tourist visa in advance.
