About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying from Canada to Philippines to Shanghai

If I'm a Canadian, flying from Toronto, to Philippines (staying 48 hours) then going to Shangai (staying under 48 hours), do I qualify for the free 72 no visa policy?

Thanks! I will be only in Shanghai for 24 hours. But from there not returning to Canada but heading to Bangkok. I assume that is OK. Please advise if you know. Thanks.

Everything is just fine until Shanghai, but you did not mention how long do you plan to stay in Shanghai and where do you plan to travel after your Shanghai stay. Please, keep in mind that you as a Canadian qualify for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai, but your flight out of Shanghai has to be within 144 hours and you cannot return to Philippines.

Of course, this is fine. In reality, in the eyes of Chinese authorities, you journey will be exactly like this:

Philippines - Shanghai - Thailand

You should just take care that none of your flights has additional landings within mainland China. You can use 24 hours or 144 hours visa free transit for your tranit in Shanghai, but keep in mind that if you exceed 24 hours for just a minute, it could be a problem. So, it is better to apply for 144 hours visa free transit. Have all the necessary documentation with you, i.e. flight tickets and hotel accommodation booking in printed form.
