My route is Sydney to Hangzhou (Arrive 8pm) then depart from Hangzhou at 7am for Kumming then 5 hour transit in Kumming before departing for Kathmandu.

I am an Australian Citizen and Passport Holder. Will I be eligible for the Free Transit?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you.
If I call Chinese Embassy in Australia tomorrow - Will they confirm the same thing or is it not worth?

Thank you so so much!

The most important detail here is, what is exactly the scheduled time of your arrival in Hangzhou and your scheduled departure time from Kunming. If between your scheduled arrival time in Hangzhou and your scheduled departure time from Kunming is less than 24 hours, then you are perfectly within the legal frame for 24 hours TWOV. In case that the mentioned time frame is longer than 24 hours, you need a visa.

If you wanna have a confirmation you have to call the immigration in Hangzhou, the chinese embassy is responsible for visas but not for the border control.

As Thomas has already mentioned, there is no need to call Chinese embassy, but I can confirm that all other checks in this regard are unnecessary. The rules are rather transparent and you definitely qualify for 24 hours TWOV. You should inform the relevant officials upon your departure from Australia (check-in and border control officials) that you intend to travel through China using 24 hours TWOV and if necessary you will support your claim by showing them your tickets that will prove your intentions.

Upon arrival in Hangzhou you will definitely apply for 24-hour visa-free entry (in China) permit, again by showing them your plane tickets and also by showing them your hotel booking (again, have this booking confirmation printed). This will allow you to exit the airport and to spend most part of the night in your hotel room instead in the airport transit zone.

As far as your check-in in Hangzhou is concerned, maybe, if flying entire journey from Australia to Kathmandu by China Eastern, you will have your luggage checked until Kathmandu and maybe you will have all your (exactly 3) boarding passes supplied to you in Australia. Anyway, this might not be a case, so you will collect your luggage in Hangzhou, go to hotel and return at the airport in time to complete your check-in procedures. In case that you have your luggage checked all the way to Kathmandu and that you have 3 boarding passes, you just proceed to security checks and skip check-in process. To know more about the last details, the best options is to contact the airline you will be flying with.
