Beijing to Hong Kong - different region?

I am planning a trip to Asia - and plan to go to Beijing for 3 days using the 72 hour transit rule. After Beijing, I want to go on to Hong Kong. I believe Hong Kong is still considered a different region, since there are no visa requirements to visit Hong Kong - but I want to be sure, can I do the 72 hours in Beijing, and then go on to Hong Kong and have it considered a different region? Thank you.

Yes if you fly or take the overnight train. Beijing moved from 72 hour to a 144 hour transit a couple years ago. HK is still considered third country
