Both of you need transit visas for Mainland China. In addition you require a HK visa if your PAR is not successful. There is a very long thread in the HK visa section of this site that explains the circumstances under which the PAR can be unsuccessful and what to do.

Transit to HK by land always require a visa regardless of how long you will be in China. There are plenty of data points on the internet and you can google them.
