Hello

if i fly into China (Qingdao) from Vietnam and my flight out of China is to Hong Kong, will that count as international so that i can apply for a 72 hour transit visa on a qualifying passport (Aus) ?

You don't need a transit visa, you're fine for the 144h twov in Qingdao.

Just one more question: If my flight out of Qingdao makes a stop over at another Chinese airport (only connecting) on the way to Hong Kong, does that affect my transit visa option?

Yes, that will affect your free transit option. Just make sure that Qingdao is your only stop in China.
