I have made this trip myself on China Eastern Airlines. You do not need a visa, provided that you have only 1 stop in China. So if you are BKK to SH to USA no visa is required. If you go BKK to SH to Beijing to USA you will need a visa. You are not allowed 2 stops on the same flight in China on the temporary transit program. 9 hours is no problem. You can even leave the airport and visit the city if you choose to do it.
