About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

End country for return flight

Hi
I currently have a London - Shanghai - London business trip booked, which after reading this information I realise won't work with the 72 hour free transit.
If I for example book an inbound flight to e.g. Paris with onward travel to London as part of one inbound booking would that be OK or should my inbound travel technically finish in Paris with a completely separate ticket to take me back to London from Paris?
Many thanks

If I understand you correctly you are saying that you want to fly Paris-LON-PVG-LON or LON-PVG-LON-Paris. Neither of these routes will work as only the countries immediately before and after China matter, hence both will still be seen as LON-PVG-LON and will require a visa.
A solution is to book and fly a same day round-trip flight to a nearby city outside Mainland China, e.g. Hong Kong, before your flight to London departs, although it may be more expensive than getting a visa.
