Is there any scenario possible to take advantage of the 72 hour transit visa?

Chicago to Shanghai (22 hour layover with an airport switch)
Shanghai to Beijing (20 hour layover)
Beijing to Australia

Even if we could just explore one of the Chinese cities we would choose the free transit over having to pay hundreds for 10-year visas.

So is there any way we can go the free route? Otherwise I think we'll be stuck in airports....the regular entry permits are too pricey and seem complicated to get. Ideas?

It's a free visa, apply for it @ the airport @ check in with your airline, and they will explain where to go when you land , inside the airport , to validate it. Make sure you read up to how far out you can move, since its limited to areas, as in you sometimes cannot move between cities. (Search if your country applies in the article above)

You cannot travel between Shanghai and Beijing on a 144 hour transit without visa. Two landings is limited to the 24 hour direct transit. You will need to get a visa or find a different routing that only lands once in mainland china.
