About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

US - Shanghai - Canada but US_Shanghai has layover in Canada.

I will be flying from USA (Detroit) to Shanghai (With 2 hour layover in Canada), then after 5 days, return ticket is from Shanghai to Canada only.
Will this qualify for 144 hour free transit as its US-China-Canada flight.
Only problem is Flight to Shanghai has a stopover in Canada, and USA & Canada are technically considered North-America region.

The problem is not that both countries are in a same region but that your flight is US-Canada-Shanghai-Canada which means you will NOT be transiting in Shanghai but in Canada. Therefore you need a visa or different flights so it will be US-Shanghai-Canada.
