About:China Visa Application Procedure and Fee

Fly from USA to Shanghai, 6 hr layover, then fly to Hong Kong to begin a cruise. Is a visa required?

We're flying Los Angeles to Shanghai (6 hr layover), then fly to Hong Kong for 4 days. From Hong Kong, we'll be on a cruises ship which will stop in Shanghai, Qingdao, and finally Tianjin (Beijing). The cruise then continues on to Japan. Total time in China is 13 days, including the Shanghai layover and time in Hong Kong. Do we need a Chinese visa, or does the 15-day visa-free policy apply? Or does the 144-hour visa-free policy apply, since once we begin the cruise, we will only be in Mainland China for less than 144 hours?

No visa required for flight to Hong Kong as you can use the 24 hour direct transit without Visa. The cruise from Hong Kong to Japan is looked at separately since Hong Kong is considered a third country from mainland China. If you are received at the Shanghai cruise port on a group (2+) tour by a Chinese tour agency (such as travel China guide) then you can do the 15 day cruise tour transit.
