About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Beijing, Tianjin & Hebei

Tokyo-Beijing-Hong Kong-Tokyo

US citizens Family of 4 flying from Tokyo to Beijing then to Hong Kong then back to Tokyo. Plan to stay in Beijing for 4 days. Do we qualify for 144 hours visa free in Beijing? How about in Hong Kong?

Yes that is valid for TWOV. Hong Kong is considered it's own country for visa purposes. US passport can stay in Hong Kong for up to 90 days without a visa.

Thank you. Does it mean we have to stay in Hong Kong for a few days and not just a layover connecting to Tokyo to qualify for the visa free transit?

There's no minimum stay requirement. If the wheels of your aircraft touch down in Hong Kong then it will count.
