can I use the 144 hr visa for a flight from tokyo to beijing to the US? I am a US citizen.

I am a US citizen. we will be flying from Tokyo to visit our son, who has been living/working in China since Oct 2017. Can we use the 144 hr. VISA exemption for our visit, then return to the US?
