Extending Work Visa or Changing to Tourist

I entered China on an L tourist, found work and had this one cancelled and replaced with a Z in Hong Kong. My residence permit expires on July 15. I would like to travel to Tibet and around China after this.

Is it possible to extend the work visa if I will no longer be under contract with the school at this time?
Alternatively, is it possible to have my entry permit changed, or will I need to go through the process of leaving the country and applying for another L tourist?

You can try to change your work Z into a tourist L at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB within China. If it can be done, you don't need to leave China for that.
